The Rwanda Agricultural and Animal Resources Development Commission (RAB) conducted potato harvest evaluations from February 3 to 6, 2026, to assess the performance of improved potato varieties Ndamira (Shangi) and Victoria, with a focus on their yield potential and resistance to late blight.This evaluation was conducted in multiple locations, including Kitabi in the Nyamagabe District of the Southern Province, Ruverere in the Musanze and Brera Districts of the Northern Province, and Tamira in the Rubawu District of the Western Province.Field performance and project cooperation
Officials from the Rwanda Agricultural Commission, development partners, and participating farmers have all recognized these varieties, which not only have excellent yield performance, but also have strong resistance to late blight. Late blight has long caused serious yield losses to potato growers in Rwanda.These improved varieties are cultivated through the Rwanda Agricultural Biotechnology Project, which is jointly implemented by the Rwanda Agricultural Commission, the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF), and other partners.This five-year project has been funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Gates Charitable Partners since October 2021, with a focus on enhancing the productivity and stress resistance of key crops such as corn, potatoes, and cassava. - Product
